Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Where do the items on this site come from?
    • All technologies and intellectual property listed on this site are the direct result of research and/or staff and faculty work at one of The University of Minnesota's campuses.

  2. There are terms my organization needs changed in the license agreement. How do we accomplish this?
    • Occasionally licensees need something changed in the standard license agreement, posted with the item on the website. We generally discourage customers from requesting changes to our licenses because of the time and expense associated with doing so. However, in circumstances where one cannot license a technology from our website without changes being made to the standard license agreement, we ask that you contact us at: Express License Support, with the specific item number and agreement type you are referencing (commercial, research, non-profit, etc.). Please note: There will be no changes made to free licenses, under any circumstances, unless licensee agrees to bear the burden of all legal and administrative costs associated with doing so.

  3. Is pricing the same when I need changes to a standard license agreement
    • No. The costs for licensing an item, using an offline process, wherein the OTC is obliged to devote resources to customizing a license for a single customer are not the same as accepting a standard license that is associated with an item on the website. When customers wish to customize a license agreement, (a legal and binding contract) it creates the need for administrative and legal staff intervention. For this reason, given the limitations on our time and resources, we require the licensee to bear the burden of all legal and administrative costs associated with these manual processes.

  4. What are my other payment options and who can I talk to about payment questions?
    • The university does accept other forms of payment for licenses besides credit cards and E-checks, however we reserve the right to add a document and/or handling fees to transactions that are considered “out-of-scope.”

      • Out-of-scope transaction are those which could be completed online using a credit card or e-check but, by choice of the licensee, are completed using another payment mechanism.

    • If you have questions about payment methods, options or concerns you may contact: Express License Support or call The Licensing Center for University of Minnesota Office for Technology Commercialization at: 612-624-0550.

    • When inquiring about an out-of-scope payment, please be sure to include all of the following information in your correspondence:
      • Technology Catalog Number/ SKU/ Technology ID
      • Technology Name
      • Licensee
      • Contact: First Name, Last name
      • Title
      • Company
      • Email Address
      • Physical address
      • Daytime Phone number
      • Agreement type or field of use
      • Desired method of payment
      • Your question (with as much detail as possible)

  5. What do I do if I need to download something again?
    • The rules for each technology are different; the provisions are clearly stated in the terms of the License Agreement. If you are still having problems please contact us using the: Contact Form

  6. Will you contact me when my license is about to expire?
    • While the University of Minnesota Office for Technology Commercialization will attempt to contact licensees when their license agreements are about to expire, we do not warrant or guarantee that this will happen. The best way to ensure that a license does not expire is to forward any changes in your purchaser, company, billing and shipping contact information to our office so that we keep you apprised of changes to your agreement status before those changes occur.

  7. How do I change my email address and other contact information so that you can contact me about updates and expiration notices?
    • To ensure that the University of Minnesota Office for Technology Commercialization is able to contact you, if the need arises, you log in to the OTC e-Commerce site and update your contact preferences if anything changes:

  8. I’ve just received an email with a link to a page on the site, but when I click it, I get an error message; what do I do?
    • Occasionally we refer licensees to web pages or websites outside of the OTC’s control, so we are not able to ensure that those pages aren’t moved or changed without our knowledge.  If you come across a broken link or information on a page that we referenced that doesn’t seem like it should be there, please send the URL for the page you are referencing to: Express License Support so we can address the issue promptly

  9. What happens to the information that you gather about me?
    • Please review our Privacy Policy for more on your information's security.
